Creating a habit of proactivity might be one of the best things you could do in your life. Actually it’s habit number 1 of Steven Covey’s best-selling book ‘The seven habits of highly effective people’. According to him private victory consists of three habits and being proactive is number 1. I would agree with him on that.

The difference between living a proactive life or a reactive life is the difference masteron injection between night and day. A difference of 25% versus a 500%. Making proactivity a habit will make you feel empowered and energized instead of feeling drained and victimized.

In 1946 the word Proactivity was introduced into the public domain by Dr. Viktor Frankl who wrote Man’s Search for Meaning. In this book Dr. Viktor Frankl tells his experiences as an Auschwitz concentration inmate during World War II and how he was able to cope with all these inhuman experiences. He discovered while he was being tortured under extreme conditions that he could still decide how this was going to affect him. The only freedom he had left was his power to choose his response to what happened to him. He imagined himself lecturing his students about his experiences. These visualisations enabled him to cope with the situation. According to him a Proactive person is someone who takes responsibility for his life, rather than looking for causes in outside circumstances or other people.

However, he was not the first to come up with this idea. The Buddha already taught:

“It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then the victory is yours. It cannot bet taken from you, not by angels, or by demos, heaven or hell.”


And Gandhi said:


“They cannot take away our self-respect if we do not give it to them”


A serious problem with reactive living is that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Reactive people become reinforced in that they are determined, and keep on producing evidence that this is the case. They blame others, feel increasingly out of control and victimized.

The victim mentality typically belongs to reactive people. Some people choose to believe that there is nothing they can do to solve their problems. They seek to blame outside circumstances and others.

In the short term this might actually feel good, but under that temporary bandage the long term wounds of anger, feeling useless and despair will further decay. Reactive people go for the quick high in the short term instead of looking for structural long term solutions. Reason being that solving problems seems often more difficult.

A successful person has the habit of being proactive, of doing the things that reactive people don’t do. Proactive people might not like doing them either, but their disliking is subordinated to the strength of their purpose. They are able to see the bigger picture, the potential yet to achieve.

Proactive people focus on their values, not on their feelings or emotions as these are unpredictable. By focussing on their values and on matters that are within their circle of influence this same circle will enlarge. Doing this on a daily basis will create a solid habit and will make you more effective and influential. Reactive people, on the other hand, dedicate their energy to matters outside of their control, their circle of concern. This leads to blaming, low energy levels and increased feelings of victimization. This causes the circle of influence to shrink.


One who works in his circle of influence on a daily basis is solution driven, a role model, a light. One who works in his circle of concern on a daily basis is a critic, a judge, a part of the problem. Also working in your circle of influence only will make the circle grow. As said earlier you have the freedom to choose your response to any situation. If you think the problem is “out there” stop yourself immediately. That thought is the problem!

That does not say that some of us are better of relatively. You could compare life with a game of poker. One player can get dealt a terrible hand and still beat someone who was dealt great cards. Of course, the person with the good hand has a higher likelihood of winning, but ultimately the winner is determined by the choices made throughout the game.

In life the people that consistently make the best choices in the situations they face are the ones that eventually will come out better. Making consistently better choices is being proactive.

I think Dr. Victor Frankl is a great example of this. It’s obvious he wasn’t dealt the best hand in his younger years, however by making the right choices he came out on top.

Proactive people feel in charge of their life. They have a purpose and will continuously work on arriving at their destiny. They anticipate problems and tackle them as soon as possible.
